As summer comes to an end in north Alabama, the Rogersville Chamber of Commerce and Joe Wheeler State Park come together to host a day of family fun along the banks of Wheeler Lake. Held in August, Rockin’ the River is a celebration of live music, children’s activities, food and other family-friendly fun at one of north Alabama’s premier state parks, Joe Wheeler State Park. The daylong event celebrates summer’s end and offers one last getaway before school gets back into full swing.
On Saturday morning, a youth fishing rodeo (for youth up to 14 years old) gets underway at 8 a.m. between the lodge and marina. Participants must bring their own pole, tackle and stringer and a parent or guardian must be present (there is a minimal cost to participate). Prizes are awarded to the most caught, biggest fish and for total weight.
More fun awaits kids with a Kids’ Fun Area offering a giant blow up slide, bouncy house, Rise Raptors Project Educational Tent, sidewalk chalk, face painting, and train rides provided by the Athens Lion Club. (Aarmband offering unlimited access must be purchased to participate.)
A handful of bands are scheduled to perform on the patio, and along with some of the area’s best musicians, there are concessions and a cash bar, raffle drawings, and guest appearances by the University of North Alabama Bass Fishing Team and players from its football team as well as local high school cheerleaders and bass fishing teams. Twilight golf featuring unlimited golf at “The General” golf course is also offered.
Family fun is also offered on Friday evening and Joe Wheeler State Park offers a special rate for a standard room with a minimum two-night stay. A 2,550-acre resort located on the shores of Wheeler Lake, Joe Wheeler State Park features a stunning waterfront lodge with restaurant and convention facilities, 18-hole golf course and clubhouse, full-service marina with docking slips, modern and primitive camping, lakeside cottages, and cozy cabins. In addition to easy access to the Tennessee River, the resort offers hiking and mountain biking trails with some of the best scenery that north Alabama has to offer.
