Paris City Cemetery

The black, wrought iron fence, reminiscent of days gone by welcomes visitors to a shade covered walk through history. – Cari Griffith

ADA Accessibility Notes

While most of the cemetery is fairly flat, it is not paved nor considered ADA accessible. Many of the features mentioned can be seen from the front gate.

The Paris City Cemetery contains many of Paris’ early settlers and leaders. Among the more notable burials are Tennessee Governor James D. Porter; Confederate and U.S. Congressman General J. D. C. Atkins; John Wesley Crockett, U.S. Congressman and son of pioneer Davy Crockett; and Dr. Edwin Wiley Grove, pharmaceutical magnate and builder of the famed Grove Park Inn at Asheville, North Carolina. His local legacy was the endowment of E.W. Grove High School in 1906. Situated in front of the historic Quinn Chapel AME Church, a block north of Ruff Street, an African-American Monument also memorializes former slaves and freedmen who worked in Paris before the Civil War.
