Lake Guntersville, Alabama's largest fishing impoundment, measures 69,000 acres with more than 900 miles of shoreline stretching from Scottsboro to Guntersville in northern Alabama. Named one of "The South's Greatest Lakes" by Southern Living, Lake Guntersville lures thousands of visitors from across the United States to experience the beautiful scenery and calm waters.
The lake has been ranked near the top of bass fishing lakes nationally. It has played hosts to national fishing tournaments including Bass Pro Shops Big Bass Tournament, FLW Tour, Bassmaster Elite Series and the prestigious Bassmaster Classic. An Alabama Bass Trail Lake, Lake Guntersville welcomes hundreds of amateur anglers from across the southeastern United States each year who travel to compete in the team-style tournament series. Lake Guntersville has been a regular tournament stop on the trail since it launched in 2014.
Though most noted nationally for large bass, Lake Guntersville is also home to bream, crappie, sauger and catfish, attracting their fair share of anglers. Plenty of free boat ramps and private marinas are available all around the lake's perimeter.
In addition to great fishing, the lake and surrounding area are known for boating, camping, hunting and eagle watching. Eagle watching is especially popular at Lake Guntersville State Park. The Eagle Awareness Weekends at Lake Guntersville State Park began in 1985 to coincide with a bald eagle restoration program in Alabama. A loss of habitat, pesticide use and poaching had pushed eagle populations to the brink of extinction nationwide. The Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries' Nongame Wildlife Program initiated a restoration project across the state of Alabama in 1984, and between the years 1985 and 1991, 91 bald eagles were released throughout Alabama. Researchers now estimate there are more than 77 bald eagle nests confirmed in Alabama, with about 18 of those in Guntersville and surrounding area.
