Knoxville Civil War Roundtable installs a cannon – Dorothy Kelly

The Knoxville Civil War Roundtable promotes "Knowledge, Commemoration and Preservation of our Civil War Heritage." The 27 year old, 150 member organization sponsors monthly meetings with Civil War experts: professional historians, authors and park guides, lecturing on all phases of the Civil War from the East Tennessee area to actions on distant battlefields. Topics have included the battles at Chattanooga, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, and many other military topics as well as leaders, the role of blacks and women and politics.

Visitors are welcome to attend the lecture for a small fee or attend the buffet and lecture for a nominal charge. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday nights of each month at the Bearden Banquet Hall at 5804 Kingston Pike in Knoxville. More information may be found on the web site at discoveret.org/kcwrt

Accomplishments

The Knoxville Civil War Roundtable supports Civil War preservation all across the nation, especially Knoxville's Civil War Fort Dickerson at Fort Dickerson City Park in south Knoxville. The organization has installed three replica cannon and numerous signs detailing the history of the fort and the battles and skirmishes at Knoxville as well as a panoramic photo of Civil War Knoxville. The members have clean up days at the fort to assist the city with its upkeep.

The second weekend of November the Roundtable commemorates Knoxville's Civil War history with a Civil War Weekend at the fort featuring tours of the fort, information on its history, book sale and demonstrations of Civil War medicine, firearms and ladies clothing. The public is also invited to see reenactors demonstrate loading and firing, camp life and cannon firing.
