Believing that art is best savored in intimate settings, where audiences have the opportunity to meet and engage with artists, The BackYard Vanguard is committed to promoting high quality local arts and artists in a variety of settings. Featuring a gallery filled with art and crafts created by local and regional artists, music events, and plays, The BackYard Vanguard at Hampton Hall Farm brings "Big City" arts to rural audiences.

Candy Durman, founder of The BackYard Vanguard, was born in Hamblen County, TN. Her 5th-great-grandfather, Hezekiah Hamblen, founded the county. Chris Durman, folk musician and music librarian at the University of Tennessee has lived in both Jefferson and Hamblen County his entire life.

Candy is an organic farmer and local history enthusiast. Agriculture and music have been mainstays of East Tennessee history, and continue to play a vibrant role in the economy of East Tennessee.

Candy Durman has written and produced plays, musicals, and performance art pieces. Additionally, at age 16, Candy began a children's theatre program for Girl's Inc, in Hamblen County. Chris has produced two cd's featuring his unique Americana music. Chris is currently researching and collecting African American folk music of Appalachia.
