Fromagerie Belle Chèvre

The creamery is housed in a renovated old cotton warehouse in the heart of downtown Elkmont. – Brad Wiegmann

Belle Chevre is an artisan cheese shop and tasting room serving handmade goat cheese, cheese complements and a cafe menu in Elkmont, located in northern rural Alabama. The local creamery has earned national attention for its French style goat’s milk cheeses. Owner Tasia Malakasis is an internationally awarded cheesemaker, cookbook author and an Alabama native who returned to her roots after working as a top marketing executive in the high-tech world.

Prior to Tasia acquiring the company, Belle Chevre was among some of the best creameries in the country. It had garnered the highest honors from the American Cheese Society and the American Dairy Goat Association. During the Clinton administration, some of the company's goat cheeses were served at the White House during a dinner for Middle Eastern dignitaries.

Tasia apprenticed with the previous owner/creator of the company for six months, and in 2007, she acquired the business and expanded and rebranded the company. She started winning top awards from the American Cheese Society, began receiving national recognition, and found her cheese being sold in some of the finest cheese shops in America. This year, Belle Chèvre was selected for the Appalachian Regional Commission’s national marketing campaign Bon Appétit, Appalachia!, a tourism mapguide of unique culinary destinations

Belle Chèvre’s milk comes from a farm down the road, where the goats munch on grasses enriched by the fertile limestone soil that gives Elkmont’s home county its name. Belle Chèvre is most noted for its Fromage Blanc, a fresh goat cheese that can be used as a spread on bagels or as an accompaniment to fresh vegetables and fruit.

Self-guided and guided tours of the creamery to see the making of the award-winning cheese are available Fridays 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. and Saturdays 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
