Emery Center

Emery Center Entrance – Dionna Reynolds

Constructed in 1886 the institution was built to address the educational needs of African-American children between the ages of seven and sixteen. Today, the exhibits include contributions of local Daltonian's; Major Richard Robert Wright, the first President of Savanna State University, Major League Baseball Player Harry "Suitcase" Simpson, and Historian Levi Branham, author of "My Life and Travels," are evident of the rich and diverse history of the Dalton and Northwest Georgia area. The Center's vast collection offers visitors and in-depth look at history from a local, state national, and international perspective. Open by appointment.


  • I-75 Exit 333, go East on Walnut Avenue for 2 miles,
  • turn left on Thornton Avenue and
  • then right at Emery Street.
  • The Center will be one block on your left.
