What would any Paris be without an Eiffel Tower? Located in Paris, Tennessee, the 66-foot Eiffel Tower is considered the 12th-tallest Eiffel Tower replica in the world. Located off Volunteer Drive, the landmark had its origin at Christian Brothers University in Memphis. Designed to scale, it was created by Dr. Tom Morrison, professor emeritus of civil engineering; Jim Jacobs, assistant professor of mechanical engineering; and Roland Raffinati, engineering lab technician. Its 500 pieces of Douglas fir and 6,000 steel rods were assembled in CBU’s Buckman Quadrangle through more than 10,000 hours donated by students, faculty, alumni, and friends of the University.
The tower was donated to the city of Paris in 1992, after a local public relations retiree, Art Nellen proposed that Paris invite other towns in the US with the same moniker to gather and discuss how to use the name of Paris to increase attention and ultimately, tourism for their respective towns. The Chamber of Commerce hosted the event called PARIS USA! Afterwards, Nellen wrote a press release that was published by the Commercial Appeal in Memphis, Tennessee. It was read by the CBU staff and soon, their tower was on its way to Paris, Tennessee.
It wasn't until years later that Memorial Park, where the tower stood, was renamed Eiffel Tower Park. A few years afterwards, special lighting was installed to illuminate the tower at night. It's not unusual at all to see tourists taking selfies in front of the tower, or a bride and groom having a wedding ceremony in the park.
Additional amenities for visitors to enjoy while visiting include a swimming pool, disc golf, a paved trail for walking or jogging, a children's playground, lighted tennis courts, soccer fields, picnic pavilions and a trout pond for fishing in the cooler months.
